A Wedding Shaped by History and Home
Susanne and Steven’s wedding wasn’t built around trends or formal expectations. They were high school sweethearts who found their way back to each other after 30 years, and their celebration reflected that history. They were married in the garden of their 100-year-old Craftsman home in Portland, surrounded by the English-style landscape Steven had been cultivating since 1990.
The vision for the day felt clear. Informally formal. Elegant, but relaxed. A great party set in a space that already held decades of meaning. When it came to the cake, though, Susanne shared that they weren’t sure where to begin.
That’s where our role started.
Translating a Feeling into a Design
From the beginning, the goal wasn’t to impose a design but to listen. The house. The garden. The sense of reunion. All of it mattered, even if it wasn’t initially expressed in concrete terms.
The cake needed to feel natural and refined, reflective of the setting rather than competing with it. We focused on forms and textures that echoed the garden itself, allowing the design to feel organic and elegant without feeling styled or forced.
Every decision was guided by the feeling Susanne described — a celebration that honored both the beauty of the space and the joy of finding each other again.
From the Client
“We felt good about our vision of the wedding, but when it came to the wedding cake, we were clueless. All we can say is thank goodness for Shelby Sewell and Shannon.
Shelby has a wonderful intuitive, creative ability to bring everything magically together. Her and Shannon created a wedding cake that not only encompassed the celebratory energy of the whole occasion, but it was also very personal to us. The cake’s design was elegantly natural. It conveyed the artistry of our house and the beautiful garden, while at the same time exuding the joyful love of high school sweethearts finally reunited. And it tasted delightful.”

A Cake That Belonged in the Garden
The finished cake felt like an extension of the setting rather than a separate focal point. It reflected the craftsmanship of the home, the care poured into the garden over decades, and the warmth of a celebration rooted in shared history.
Flavor mattered just as much as form, and the cake delivered on both. It was designed to be enjoyed in the same spirit as the day itself — relaxed, joyful, and meaningful.
